Edited by the Departmento de Lingüística of the Universidad de Chile, Boletín de Filología is mainly devoted to research in Hispanic linguistics and philology, though contributions on new theoretical developments and important methodological innovations in all areas of linguistics are also welcome. In addition to original essays --ranging in length from short research notes up to major reports--, the journal publishes review articles and book reviews. Founded in 1934, Boletín de Filología, the oldest periodical devoted to Hispanic linguistics and philology, has traditionally encouraged publications from abroad, notably from Europe and America. The journal is published biannually (one number each semester) and the principal languages of publication are Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese. Boletín de Filología is a double-blind peer reviewed publication (the referees having to be from outside the Editorial Board). It is essential reading for those interested in linguistic research in Spanish, both Peninsular and American, as well as in theoretical and empirical work in linguistics its widest sense.

History and available back issues

Boletín de Filología is a publication of the Departament of Linguistics of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the University of Chile. This Faculty was created on the 14^th of November of 1842. Since its foundation by Dr. Rodolfo Oroz in 1934, the journal has been mainly devoted to the publication of articles, notes, review articles and book reviews on Hispanic philology and linguistics. Likewise, though on a smaller scale, essays on folklore and Spanish and Hispanic American Literature have been published. Currently the main goal of the journal is to publish original articles, notes or review articles on Hispanic linguistics and philology, romance linguistics, and general linguistics.

Boletín de Filología is the oldest Latin American journal devoted to Hispanic linguistics and philology and since its foundation its prestige has been internationally acknowledged. In its more than a half century of publication, the following, among others, eminent Hispanists from all over the world have contributed to the journal: Amado Alonso, Joan Corominas, Tomás Navarro Tomás, Antonio Tovar, Max Leopold Wagner, Yakov Malkiel, Manuel Alvar, Bertil Malmberg, Bernard Pottier, Harri Meier, Giovanni Meo-Zilio, J. Donald Bowen, Günter Haensch, Juan M. Lope Blanch, Germán de Granda, Humberto López Morales, Guillermo Guitarte, José Joaquín Montes Giraldo, Tomás Buesa Oliver, María Beatriz Fontanella de Weinberg, Ofelia Kovacci, Ángel Rosenblat, Marius Sala y Tudora Sandru. In the past the journal was published annually. Currently, two numbers of each annual volume are published.

Successive reforms of the structure of the University of Chile have led to changes in the name of the journal, as the journal has on occasions been administratively attached to different academic units. However, Boletín de Filología has invariably met the goals set out in Volume IV (1944-1946).
