Abstract

Considering the boom in the study of economic development and development strategies in the last quarter century, this paper examines the correlations of economic potential and development from the point of view of small countries in the world economy, and also the development alternatives appropriate to them. Among others, the following issues are analyzed: the expansion of the scale of economic activities and the extent to which this influences the modern process of growth; where and how are the advantages and disadvantages of small countries, and what are the characteristic features of them, given the current circumstances of the world economy; what are the economic-political measures, the forms of economic management and the structures that can compensate for the disadvantages arising from the small size of each country.

Author Biography

Bela Kadar, Profesor investigador del Instituto de Estudios Internacionales, Universidad de Chile

Profesor húngaro. En 1956 recibió el título de economista en la Universidad Eotvos Loraud de Budapest. Posteriormente se desempeñó como funcionario del grupo de investigaciones económicas internacionales del Banco Nacional Húngaro y del departamento de economía de la empresa de comercio exterior Elektorimpex (1958-1960). En el período 1960-65 colaboró en investigaciones del Instituto de Mercados de Hungría. Ha publicado numerosos artículos en revistas especializadas y en 1967-1968 viajó a Estados Unidos, invitado por la Fundación Ford para dictar conferencias en las Universidades de Harvard, Stanford y Columbia. En 1970 se desempeñó como profesor investigador en el Instituto de Estudios Internacionales de la Universidad de Chile.
